Curating scientific and outreach content on Instagram: Taxonomy and examples

The aim of this paper is to offer a first approach to the application of content curation on the social platform Instagram by researchers and specialists on scientific dissemination. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted, presenting a specific taxonomy to analyze science content curation publications on this plattform. The proposed taxonomy is based on various parameters grouped under two main dimensions, Content and Curation, including: Quantity, Temporal range, Provenance of the contents, Curation techniques, and Integration of information. The results demonstrate the feasibility of this framework through the identification of representative cases drawn from different Instagram formats (such as posts, carousels, reels, and stories), published by research personnel, institutions, and communicators from various scientific disciplines and with gender representation. This taxonomy is considered to be highly useful for the scientific community and disseminators, helping them to improve the quality of scientific communication and to mitigate the specific limitations of this platform.
